Memorial Walkway

Finding Peace and Remembrance: The Memorial Walkway at The Unitarian Church in Charleston

Many of us find deep connection and belonging within the walls and grounds of The Unitarian Church in Charleston. This sacred space has nurtured us through life’s joys and challenges, offering guidance and community. Now, our church offers a new and meaningful way to remain connected to this beloved community, even in our final rest: the Memorial Walkway.

Nestled within our peaceful churchyard garden, the Memorial Walkway provides a serene and beautiful final resting place for members, ministers, and their families. It’s a place dedicated to quiet reflection, remembrance, and honoring the lives of those we have cherished.

What is the Memorial Walkway?

The Memorial Walkway features dignified niches, each designed to hold the cremated remains of a loved one. A simple yet elegant marble plate will mark each niche, bearing the name and dates of the individual. This thoughtful design creates a cohesive and respectful environment for all.

Who is Eligible?

The Memorial Walkway is available to current and past members, as well as our dedicated ministers. Also eligible are members’ and ministers’ spouses, parents, step-parents, grandparents, children, step-children, and grandchildren.

Understanding the Costs and Care:

To reserve a niche in the Memorial Walkway, there is a fee of $2,500. This fee covers the reservation itself, the professional opening and closing of the niche for inurnment, and the ongoing perpetual care and maintenance of the walkway and surrounding churchyard. For those who choose to secure a niche within the first twelve months of its availability (before the end of April 2026), a special introductory price of $2,000 is being offered. Please note that the costs associated with cremation, the urn, and the initial and final engraving on the marble plate are separate and borne by the applicant.

The funds generated from the niche fees will be directed into a dedicated Churchyard Maintenance Endowment Fund held at the Coastal Community Foundation. This ensures that our churchyard remains a beautiful and well-cared-for space for years to come.

Why Consider the Memorial Walkway?

Choosing the Memorial Walkway offers several meaningful benefits:

A Place Within Our Community: For those who have found a spiritual home and a strong sense of belonging within our church, the Memorial Walkway provides a way to remain connected to this cherished community for eternity.
