Music
Bringing people together through music and shared expression.
Music is a vibrant and essential part of life at the Unitarian Church in Charleston. Our music program brings together volunteers of all abilities, backgrounds, and walks of life, offering meaningful ways for congregants to actively participate in worship services and community life. Enhancing our services through music is a deeply satisfying and rewarding experience, whether you are a seasoned musician or simply love to sing or play. There are two primary ways to get involved in the music program at the Unitarian Church in Charleston.
Chancel Choir
The Chancel Choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings and typically participates in worship services every other week. The choir helps lead congregational singing, supports hymns and songs throughout the service, and often presents special musical selections.
The Chancel Choir is open to singers of all experience levels. The ability to read music is helpful but not required, and new members are welcome throughout the year.
House Band
The House Band performs monthly during worship services, choosing a different musical genre each month. This ensemble offers a dynamic and collaborative opportunity for instrumentalists and vocalists to contribute to worship in a variety of musical styles.
Participation in the House Band provides a flexible way to be involved in worship music while exploring a broad range of genres.
Special Music & Community Events
As part of our commitment to community outreach and creative expression, the Unitarian Church in Charleston hosts several special music events throughout the year:
The Phantasmagorical Extravaganza
a family-friendly Halloween variety show
Classical Pride Charleston
a Piccolo Spoleto Festival event celebrating composers and performers within the LGBTQIA+ community
Messiah Singalong
a participatory musical tradition welcoming singers of all levels
These events extend the church's music ministry beyond worship services and invite the wider Charleston community to connect through music.
