"The Pompe and Pride of Man: Pride and Humility in
Early New England" with Dr. Sandy Slater
Dr. Slater’s new book The Pompe and Pride of Man: Pride and Humility in Early New England explores the dichotomy of pride and humility in American Puritanism, beginning with their transatlantic migration. Her work argues that a distinct form of American Puritanism arose that affected every facet of daily life: religious understandings, court and legal proceedings, and conceptions of the self through diaries and letters. Puritans placed the punishment and eradication of pride as a central lens through which society should be ordered.
